2016 IC1203 COST ENERGIC TRAINING SCHOOL

“VGI & POLICY: MANAGING, INTEGRATING AND TARGETING CROWD-SOURCED INFORMATION”

Fattoria di Maiano, Fiesole (Italy) 11th to 15th July 2016

COST Training School

Training Schools are aimed at widening the knowledge of the Action activities, providing intensive training on a new and emerging subject with unique equipment or know-how in one of the activities of the Action. They are a perfect tool to enable knowledge sharing and collaboration among participants. The Training School also provides dissemination opportunity for the whole Action’s activities.

COST ENERGIC training School is organised by IC1203 COST Action in collaboration with the Vespucci Initiative (www.vespucci.org) on research topics related to the objectives of the Action (as expressed in the MoU). The Training School will provide intensive training in emerging research topics within the laboratories and organizations involved in COST ENERGIC Action. Participants are mainly, but not exclusively, young researchers involved in COST Actions. Training Schools also cover appropriate re-training as part of life-long learning.

2015 IC1203 COST ENERGIC TRAINING SCHOOL

“GIS, CROWDSOURCED GEOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION AND CITIZEN SCIENCE”

Hosted by the Institute for Climate Change and Sustainable Development, University of Malta.

8-12 June 2015 at the Msida Campus, University of Malta, Malta.

The training school is part of COST ENERGIC Activities for Year 3.

Topic description

The Training School focuses on various aspects of GIS, crowd-sourced Geographic Information and the role of Citizen Science. The aim of the training school is to share experiences with using GIS, collecting geographic information and exploring Citizen Science. At the end of the training school participants will understand the various sources of voluntary geographic information, they will be able to harvest such information and apply some analysis techniques in various applications of voluntary geographic information. The training school will include a mix of lecture based sessions and in-the-field experiences collecting geographic data. A day-long fieldtrip to Gozo, Malta’s second island, is included in the programme, as well as hands-on experiences using hardware and software. Tutors and facilitators will provide facilities for participants to try out new ways of interacting with Geographic Information as well as support learning with lectures and tutorials. The training school is open to a wide range of participants having a basic knowledge of GI and GIS.

The University of Malta is located close to the capital city Valletta, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Programme includes:

  • Sessions dealing with Geographic Information, VGI and Citizen Science
  • Sessions in the field collecting information through a wide range of technologies
  • Day trip to Gozo for a full-fletched data collection exercise
  • Presentations by students
  • Panel discussions with trainers from five different countries

“VGI AND CITIZEN SCIENCE: ENGAGING, CREATING AND UNDERSTANDING”

Topic description

The Training School is devoted to the commonality and differences between Citizen Science and Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI). Many Citizen Science activities are geographical (e.g. ecological observations at a specific location) while many VGI activities focus on collecting facts, identifying patterns or asking questions about a locale and therefore have similarities with science activities. Therefore issues of participation and public engagement, data quality, data integration and the analysis of information that emerge from these activities have a lot in common. The week activities will be articulated in practical scientific activities where participants will actively contribute with their knowledge, intellectual effort or with their tools and resources. Topics will cover collective intelligence, quality assurance, methodologies for data analysis, interoperability with official data sources, sustainability, governance, funding, and evaluation and impact measurements. Facilitators will provide experimental data and facilities for researchers, raise new questions and co-create a new scientific culture. Under the support of the facilitators, participants will be encouraged to explore new directions in their research, test methods from other disciplines, and experience data collection activities themselves. The summer institute is open to a wide range of citizen science and VGI activities including biodiversity/conservation observations and recording; volunteer computing that involves geographic information; volunteer thinking where the tasks are geographical location-specific; Do It Yourself (DIY) science; and community/civic science.
